An Australian Politician Proposed

An Australian lawmaker is circulating on news sites because he popped the question to his partner of seven years to prove that love is love.

Tim Wilson is a 37-year-old lawmaker in the conservative coalition government.

While participating in the House of Representatives debate about whether same sex marriage should be legalized, Wilson turned to the public gallery where his partner Ryan Bolger was watching. That’s when Wilson asked Bolger to marry him.

Wilson’s speech went as follows:

“The person I have to thank most is my partner Ryan. You’ve had to tolerate more than most because you’ve had to put up with me.”

“This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship. We both know this isn’t the reason we got involved in politics.”

“In my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands, and they are the answer to a question we cannot ask,” an emotional Wilson said, referring to the first time he addressed the Parliament last year.

“There’s only one thing left to do: Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?”

Bolger then responded with a mouthed but excited yes, which caused the chamber to then break out into applause.

This joyous moment however does not distract from the fact that the vote in the Australian House of Representatives over marriage equality is currently looming.

The official vote is expected to happen either Wednesday or Thursday, but it is preceded by the Senate’s approval of the marriage bill by a nearly 4-1 margin.
