Call Me By Your Name Might Get A Sequel

The film may not have reached a wide release yet, but whispers of a Call Me By Your Name sequel are already flying.

The film based off of a gay romance novel of the same name is the gay film of the year. We told you about it all the way back in February of last year when the film was first being talked about at Sundance.

The film and novel’s story follows Oliver, a grad student in his mid-twenties, who spends his summer staying in Italy with a professor and his family. Oliver connects with the professor’s 17-year-old son Elio and the two start a relationship together.

The movie has been making the rounds at indie circuits for the past year now and has been buzzed about enough to earn Golden Globe recognition (with the Oscars just around the corner).

But all that said, the film is still in very select theaters with no wide releasing in sight. Despite making over $1 Million dollars with only 4 theaters in its second weekend of release, the film is still slowing opening up across the United States. As such, these rumors of a sequel are a bit perplexing.

But it’s the film’s director, Luca Guadagnino, who is fanning the flames of sequel talks. Guadagnino talked to The Guardian to share his thoughts on the idea of continuing Elio and Oliver’s story.

“These characters are so fantastic, and I want to know what happens to them. The last 40 pages of the book tell you about 20 years in the life of Oliver and Elio. So I started to think about Michael Apted’s Up, and the cycle of films Truffaut devoted to the character of Antoine Doinel. And I thought, maybe it’s not a question of sequel, it’s a question of chronicling everyone in this film. I think seeing these characters growing in the bodies of these actors will be quite fantastic.”

All the talk and rumors aside, there has been no official notice of a sequal in the works. Though, any major award wins would surely help in that matter.

Would you be willing to see Call Me By Your Name 2 in theaters? Did you get to see the first one yet?

We’ll keep you updated if more comes from these talks and rumors later.
