my(29) boyfriend(40) of three years was just diagnosed with HIV after a short breakup. I love him very much and want to continue seeing him and having sex. Other than wearing a condom and spitting, how can I avoid getting getting HIV?

  1. You can’t contract HIV from spitting. He should start treatment straight away. That will make him undetectable in a matter of weeks and the CDC state that after 6 months of being undetectable a person cannot transmit HIV. Condoms are another safety net, particularly if you aren’t monogamous. You might also consider PrEP. Many couples are in the same situation and it is very easy to manage. Talk to people in the same kind of situation and you will see how normal it can be. But number 1 priority is for your partner to start and stay on treatment.
